Normally, hearing loss is a very gradual process, but if you experience a sudden onset of hearing loss know that it should be taken very seriously as it may become a persistent or permanent hearing loss.

Hearing loss is one of three types:

  • Conductive (involves outer and/or middle ear)
  • Sensorineural (involves inner ear)
  • Mixed (combination of the two)

A hearing test will determine which type of hearing loss you have. If it is determined that the sudden hearing loss is sensorineural, then it is considered a medical emergency and we would recommend that you see a physician as soon as possible. Medical intervention can sometimes reverse sudden sensorineural hearing loss. If your hearing loss is conductive, often ear wax or middle ear fluid are the causes and that can easily be taken care of.

Common symptoms of sudden sensorineural hearing loss include:

  • Occurrence of hearing loss without a recognizable cause
  • Speech sounds distorted
  • Hearing loss in only one ear
  • Dizziness
  • Ear fullness
  • Tinnitus
